New Suzuki Across: the plug-in hybrid SUV built for adventure
Suzuki is opening orders for the second-generation Across, its plug-in hybrid SUV developed through its partnership with Toyota. More efficient and more spacious inside, it is built around a new-generation plug-in hybrid system combined with a 22.7 kWh battery and electric all-wheel drive. Its rugged design, off-road capability and very comprehensive standard specification are aimed at drivers looking for a versatile SUV: capable of running on electric power for everyday driving, it remains comfortable on long journeys. The new Across is now available to order from Segond Automobiles in Monaco and Menton.
Design and performance: a rugged, efficient and responsive SUV
The new Across has a much more assertive personality. Its front end stands out with a high-set grille featuring simple, powerful lines. Its planted stance, large wheels and generous wheel arches highlight its ability to venture off the beaten track. It measures 4.60 m long, 1.86 m wide and 1.69 m high, with a 2.69 m wheelbase. Four colours are available: Massive Gray, Ever Rest, Super White and Attitude Black.
Under the bonnet, a long-stroke 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with a high compression ratio (14.0:1) combines direct and port injection. The system automatically switches between the two depending on driving conditions. This engine produces 105 kW (143 PS) and works with two electric motors: 150 kW at the front and 40 kW at the rear. The system has a combined output of 309 PS and is more compact: the power electronics and DC/DC converter are integrated into the front eAxle, and silicon carbide semiconductors reduce energy losses. Larger than on the previous generation, the 22.7 kWh battery extends the distance that can be covered in all-electric mode. The WLTP electric range of 125 km is currently pending homologation.
In terms of performance, the Across accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and reaches 180 km/h. Its E-Four electric all-wheel drive continuously adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear and helps correct both understeer and oversteer. In addition to the NORMAL, ECO and SPORT modes, the E-Four TRAIL mode locks this distribution and manages braking and power on challenging terrain. The chassis combines MacPherson strut front suspension with double wishbone rear suspension, along with ventilated disc brakes on all four wheels.
Trim, equipment and technology: a very comprehensive standard specification
The new Across is offered in a single trim level, Style, which includes most features as standard. Inside, the ‘island architecture’ concept brings together the screens, audio system, electronic gear selector and main controls in a single unit for intuitive operation. The lowered dashboard improves forward visibility.
The digital cockpit is based on two screens:
- a customisable 12.3-inch instrument cluster, which can display navigation or energy flows;
- a 12.9-inch central touchscreen for climate control, audio and navigation, with configurable widgets and full smartphone connectivity.
The head-up display projects speed and navigation guidance around four to six metres ahead of the driver, with a choice of three display styles. A wireless charger and five USB-C ports complete the package.
Comfort has not been overlooked. The driver’s seat is 10-way power-adjustable, with lumbar support and a two-position memory function. The passenger seat is 8-way adjustable. The front seats offer three-level heating, and the upholstery combines synthetic leather and fabric. The 446-litre boot (VDA) opens with a simple foot movement thanks to the hands-free tailgate, and the rear seats fold almost flat.
In terms of safety, the Across features autonomous emergency braking that also detects pedestrians and cyclists, complemented by emergency steering assist. Its adaptive cruise control uses map data to anticipate toll booths and junctions. These are joined by lane keeping and lane change assist, front cross-traffic alert, driver drowsiness and distraction detection, and 360° cameras.
