Design and powertrains: an A3 for every driving style
The Audi A3 asserts its personality at first glance. Its flatter, wider Singleframe grille is framed by redesigned bumpers. At the rear, all versions feature a new bumper, complemented by a diffuser with the S line package. Another new feature, and a first for the A3: you can choose from up to four digital daytime running light signatures in the MMI system. The coming-home and leaving-home animations adapt to the selected signature.
The range comprises three body styles. The five-door Sportback remains the versatile benchmark. The Saloon offers classic elegance. The A3 allstreet adopts a crossover look, with ground clearance raised by three centimetres compared with the Sportback and a higher driving position.
When it comes to powertrains, a test drive will allow you to compare several approaches. The 35 TFSI combines a 150 PS 1.5 petrol engine with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. The 35 TDI uses a 150 PS 2.0 diesel with the same transmission. The TFSI e plug-in hybrid versions combine the 1.5 TFSI with an 85 kW electric motor integrated into a six-speed S tronic gearbox. They deliver 204 PS and 350 Nm (40 TFSI e) or 272 PS and 400 Nm (45 TFSI e). Their 25.7 kWh battery offers a claimed electric range of up to 143 km, enough to cover most daily journeys without using any fuel. Using DC fast charging at up to 50 kW, it charges from 10 to 80% in under 30 minutes.
For those seeking thrills, the Audi S3 Sportback and Saloon deliver 333 PS and 420 Nm from their turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The quattro drive with torque splitter improves agility through corners, and the exhaust system ends in four tailpipes.
Equipment and technology: everyday comfort
Inside, the A3 has become more refined. The centre console, air vents and gear selector have been redesigned. Standard equipment now includes a leather multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, an ambient lighting package and an adjustable front centre armrest. The ambient lighting extends to the front door trims, illuminated over a large area through a laser-perforated textile panel.
The digital environment is based on a 10.1-inch infotainment screen and the Audi virtual cockpit, which replaces conventional instruments. Digital radio and wireless smartphone charging are included, along with two USB-C ports in the front and two in the rear. As an option, MMI Navigation plus provides access to an app store and voice control, with integrated Amazon Alexa.
The A3 can also evolve after purchase. Thanks to functions on demand, you can activate up to five features via the myAudi app: MMI Navigation plus, the Apple CarPlay / Android Auto interface, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist or two-zone climate control. You can activate them for one month, for one to three years, or permanently.
Music lovers can opt for the Sonos sound system with 3D sound. To personalise the cabin, Audi offers decorative inlays in recycled polyester or Dinamica microfibre, which is also available as seat upholstery and is made partly from recycled polyester.
